A 3:30 movie staple (during the 1970s) finally arrives in DVD! A awful movie, but gripping in a car-wreck kind of contrivance.

The first thing that comes to mind is the costuming…this movie was made in 1965, but everyone’s dressed for the sock hop! One exception is the Beau Brummells, featured as a club band early in the film…one stare at these guys and you’ll maintain that yes, even native Californian’s tried to emulate the watch and the sound of the Beatles. Broad band (and they actually wrote some exquisite first-rate music) …but their efforts to glimpse like the Ed Sullivan-ear Fab Four is humorous.

Speaking of the club…it’s located in the fictional city of Hainesville, California and its called the “Whisky-A-Go-Go”. I don’t regain out considerable, but my recollection is that the Whisky is on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood!

It’s a huge chance to glimpse some early performances by future prominent actors…you’ll notice the hairiest Beau Bridges you can stand (this movie is Beau-tiful), Ron Howard (looks exactly like Opie to the point of distraction, Tony Basil (yes, that Toni Basil), Tish Genuine (daughter of Ann Sothern), and Tim Rooney (Mickey’s son) .

Someone pointed out to me recently that the giant ducks were controlled by attaching strings to their legs and wings…no scheme to no for positive except to perceive, and definite enough, you can watch the strings. Sort of took the fun out of it for me.

Watch for one of the most offensive endings ever committed to film. Highly recommended for camp value. If you ever net the chance, glimpse the MST3K treatment of this film.

This was, at the time of its release, no less than the crowning achievement of man. So it should not sad the glory of Village of the Giants one bit that a mere 4 years later, Armstrong’s moonwalk eclipsed this film’s importance to humanity. The fact remains that Village of the Giants represents a watershed moment in our history.

It is, and you can bear me, because I am a believable guy, the BEST Poor MOVIE OF ALL TIME!

All the things that execute Bert I. Gordon movies what they are are prove here, in full- and silly- force. In fact, it is as if all Bert’s planets aligned at once, and he found his good calling, racy beyond mere Sizable Beasts and Cyclopean things and giant Spiders, to those most photogenic of glandular mishaps: Giant women! Not to say that there isn’t a giant tarantula in this film, or a large beast in the whiny accomplish of a young Beau Bridges, but Bert’s camera clearly favors the full charms of Joy and Tish (as well as the average-sized pulchritude of Toni) over the evermore musty thrills of mere oversized creatures. Like, giant grasshoppers are SO 1957!

Other things contribute to the overall radiant quality of this film’s ineptitude, not the least of which is, despite Bert’s recurrent leering, a basically naïve sensibility: movies had not become too dirty or trashy yet. The terrible teens are about as menacing as wheelchair-bound octogenarians- they wear cardigans, for goshsakes. And while there is a obvious cheesecake factor at play here, it is in the G-rated manner of the Frankie-and-Annie Beach Party films, not the slimy type in evidence in later Hammer horrors.

Other awful movies are equally as “abominable.” Al Adamson, Jerry Warren, Colman Francis, Ed Wood’s later stuff, even Bert himself a few years later… all of these guys construct lousy films. But they’re sleazier somehow- not as *fun.*

Fans of the Unsightly Sun Demon know well how star Robert Clarke’s trousers became soaked with sweat during filming in the hot sun, to the point where it looked as though the Sun Demon couldn’t control his bladder. That led to unintentional hilarity for B-lovers.

Now imagine several howlingly amusing instances like that for every runt of this film’s 80-minute bustle time. Dialogue, position, effects, music, direction- everything is side-splittingly …here. There are more laughs in this movie than in Jim Carrey’s entire filmography.

And far from being the bewildering, incoherently abominable mess that Idea 9 is, this movie is very straightforward; it honest does everything in such an over-the-top and utterly outrageous fashion.

Now, in the manner of the copy on those lovably hyperbolic posters from days gone by, I will outline only a portion of this movie’s treasured moments:

See! Beau Bridges try to remove up a chick by telling her his dad is the biggest man in the meat business!

See! Where John Ratzenberger got his inspiration for Cliff Clavan the mother-dominated postman in Beau’s wink-wink nudge-nudge performance!

See! Ronnie Howard construct a substance which turns normal things into giants, and act surprised when they leave!

See! Several scenes of interminable length while the poor “teens” shake it before the camera! Gaze Beau produce aesthetic employ of the ever-popular dance technique known as ‘The White Man’s Overbite!’

See! Noteworthy more unbelievable, abominable stuff than I could command you about if this review were five times this long! This really doesn’t even launch to touch how amusing the dialogue, or performances, or the direction are!

Before viewing this miniseries, I had only read the book (of the same name) by David Simon and Edward Burns published in 1997. Serene, the world of decaying neighborhoods, the havoc of street drugs and hopelessness among the disadvantaged has deepened in the Bush era. It took an ingenious director like Charles Dutton to picture one family’s insecure history sharp miniseries that doesn’t miss a beat. And he’s selected a cast of relative unknowns who remove their roles with dead-on realism

The film follows a year in the life of one impoverished family against the backdrop of their neighborhood during the 1990′s a drug-ridden quarter-mile from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Dutton, like Simon and Burns, dwells on the humanity of his cxharacters and the universal themes of their day-to-day struggles. You needn’t have been an alcoholic or drug addict to enter the hearts of these people or understand how they swing between hope and hopelessness.

As political commentary, THE CORNER couldn’t be more timely, especially in its occupy of urban education, inner city commmunties, underage pareenthood and America’s Dickensian juvenile justice system. Viewing what these potentially gifted people endure, viewers may ask how many gracious people we discard because of our cultural myopia, institutional racism and apathy.

The core performance here is T.K. Dutton’s “Gary” — the father of his broken family. The ways in which he struggles to overcome indicate shame in light of past success is something most of us will peer — rush aside — if not today, then tomorrow.

There is no gain to train of except for Corey Harris’s blues track which occurs on splash screens and during the credits for each of six episodes. Dutton frames each episode with interviews of different considerable characters to evoke the feel of a documentary, and he more than succeeds.

Dutton understands the lives of these characters because he grew up in their neighnorhood and experienced first-hand the dissolution of life on these corners — where red tops and spider bags are the basis of life and death. He knows that the afflict of addiction is potent, but not always as devastating as the cruelties of the staunch world “shapely.”

Every facet of this production suggests HBO should rebroadcast THE CORNER on its tenth anniversary. You wil laugh, cry, wince and cheer; and when it’s over, you will detest to leave these pleasurable people.

While there are segments that are bleak, Dutton didn’t intend to shock. He wanted to remind us that these men and women are fully human, and that –like Gary– we have the potential to stumble, too. We might be doomed to the Corner but for the grace of God.

Five blooming stars for the DVD space — and the book on which it’s based.

Seldom do you win a film that makes you feel as discontinuance to the characters as this one does. If I could set aside into words the range of emotion you will feel when viewing this series, you would engage this space without hesitation.

Though it is right that this is not for everyone, those who can deal with the harshest realities of life will be blown away by the gritty “in your face” come of this Mini-Series. You will catch yourself hoping with all your heart that Gary or Fran will “straighten up” and net it together, only to realize that they are not pillars of strength and are sometimes doomed to fail, even before they originate. The most disappointing thing about the series is that it ends. As you progress through the episodes you will gradually launch to fear the inevitable slay, and it will leave you hungry for more.

The declare of the DVD today has yielded a few surprises. There is some consuming material included in the DVD with the Theatrical Trailer, Interviews with the Director and Robert Shaw and also a short Murky and White film is shown on how it was filmed including footage of the German military advisor who insured an lawful detailing of uniforms, events, etc. in this basically fictitious chronicle of the illustrious battle of world war 2. Now what needs to be said is that this is a polished transfer of the widescreen film. The overture is place wait on and all of the extras that were usually lop. Including the “Panzerlied” gathering of tank commanders that is sometimes missing from television broadcasts as well as the “set aside the son but shoot the father” scene. The musical glean by Frankel is one of the best made in a war film presentation in a rotund orchestra by the Modern philharmonic. They have restored the unique soundtrack to the DVD and it is impressive for a movie that was made in the 60′s. Someone cared about putting this one succor together and it shows! Graphics, scenery, etc. are all very impressive. Although this movie was panned as to accuracy as far as the status, it is a very interesting movie and is well remembered by everyone who saw it in the movies when it was released. Seeing it again now, it is as if I were assist in that movie house and as if time had not moved on. A Broad release! Worth it to any fan of this film.

This is a classic war movie. Though lacking historical realism, its calm an scrumptious film. Lots of tanks anyway. Gargantuan name actors (Fonda, Bronson, Andrews, Shaw, Savalas, and the like) . Not really about the true Battle Of The Bulge, it takes some of the events from that famed battle and remolds it into a kinda ‘what-if’ record about a German armoured spearhead that launches an attack to cleave off Allied forces, to bewitch time to earn the recent jet aircraft and nuclear weapons and earn the war. Names of characters are all fiction.

What really disappoints me is that a lot of footage (at least 20 minutes worth) has been crop out from the recent print. Please, Warner, release the Plump version on DVD!

I view this movie would mostly be for kids, but I consider I laughed as great if not more than the younger folks around me. The CGI is noble, the position is orderly, and Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Robin Williams say the goods. It was also a treat to explore Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney in action again. Not to mention that Carla Gugino is a feast for the eyes. It’s nice to contemplate a capable film for the whole family once every so often. It makes you feel like a kid again, without a care in the world.

This solid family movie from director Shawn Levy (the modern PINK PANTHER, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2) comes from a solid book like Jumanji, and Zathura, the 1993 kid’s mystery-comedy of the same name.Like the unique yarn, Larry (or was it Hector originally) becomes a night guard at Unique York’s Museum of Natural History,in order to “grow up” in the eyes of his ex-wife and his son. He expects to have an easy time. But on his first night, he dozes off, then wakes up to a missing dinosaur skeleton.Soon his learns that history really comes alive at this museum and he’s got his hands elephantine keeping it in line.

Owen Wilson yet again teams-up with Stiller for a puny fraction literally, he’s a runt from an historical diorama (notice Starsky & Hutch, The Royal Tenenbaums, Meet the parents, Permanent Midnight, Zoolander for more orderly Stiller/Wilson team-ups) . Actually the role is more than a cameo and is capable of the memoir. The two play off each other superbly, like a modern-day Bing & Hope, only humorous (I Kid, I Kid) .

Another standout casting is Robin Williams lending Larry a hand as an animated-wax Teddy Roosevelt. Williams is able to appetizing his moments of insanity as a relatively static historical mentor while enfusing others with involving realism and soulfulness (seriously) .

Loads of ample visuals, especially at the IMAX engagements, like the gripping dog-like T-Rex, Mammoths, stampedes and more. Definitely in the spirit of Jumanji, only with worthy more heart.

What a disappointment! Of course, compare to Hot Wheels World Urge the whole series was a disappointment, more about that later. It would seem that Mattel Entertainment ran out of money to invent a final episode that would tie together all the loose ends.

If you’ve been following the series you know that there are two street racing teams, the Teku and the Metal Maniacs, matched up against the Drones. These teams urge in an exertion to derive Accele-Chargers, which we regain out in this last episode, have no trusty exercise out side of fooling Gelorum. As the series of movies progress, yet another team enters the fray called the silencerz, who we gather out, in the very last seen of this episode, is led by Vert’s father, but it is not explained how or why.

In the first episode, we are reintroduced to Kadeam, the only character in my concept, that had any loyal good fiber. Kadeam gets trapped in this same first episode and later is turned into a Drone. If any one deserved to be saved it was Kadeam. But sadly, in this last episode he is made out to be a villain and dies in the kill. Instead the Teku and Metal Maniacs team up and enter the Drone’s lair. Once in the lair they set Imprint Wylde with a minimum of resistance from the Drones.

By this point, it is definite that the writers of the series had written themselves into a corner, which began with the introduction of the silencerz…a very terrible space twist. In a vain attempt to add some suspense, we get out that Gig is really a Silencerz operative, but we are also told that Tezla stole Gig from the Silencerz. WHAT? That would mean Tezla knew about the Silencerz long before the World Bustle. It’s really dismal when you seek writers do things like this.

The rivalry between Tork and Nolo is resolved in a four-sentence conversation between the two. The relationship between Lani and Taro is barely addressed and they should have been brought support together for some treasure interest. The death of Vert’s mother, which seems to have created great of the animosity between Vert and his father is not addressed either. At the ruin, the Teku and the Metal Maniacs are left with no cars and Vert enters the Silencer’z lair alone and is captured. The very last seen shows a silencer walking up to Vert, slides away his face shield to note Vert’s father, who says, “Son we have to talk.” And that’s it, the movie ends. Instead of being left with a feeling that the honorable guys won over harmful, you are left saying, “WHAT??? ”

This reminds me a broad deal of your child falling in appreciate with some unbelievable toy on television that costs a itsy-bitsy fortune. Then when you finally problem the money together to lift it, the toy either breaks proper away or in no arrangement functions like shown on television. That’s how disappointing this movie is.

Really the whole accelerator series was a let down compared to the World Run that had a astronomical place, writing and animation. With the movies targeted at children, glamorizing street racing, which is a criminal activity, isn’t the most wholesome belief to immoral characters on. Next, the place in accelerators makes no sense, for instance, why would Taro, a multi millionaire adventurer, pick up alive to with a bunch of street punks/criminals? Also, with five million dollars in his pocket, why would Ticket Wylde glean fervent with the same group, when he could have easily bought his diagram into Formula racing and continued to compete against his brother, who was clearly rich himself? Then the view that Tezla carve off the supply of Nitrox-2 in order to conduct his contain research, by himself, doesn’t beget sense either. And how were the Drones able to retract the ring of power out of Hot Wheels City when it was pointed out in World Hasten that only a human could do so?

Now, I have to ask, did a ten year feeble do the animation? In World Rush, the characters were well proportioned and believable. In Accelerators, they scrutinize like steroid nightmares. And why do they all have elephant sized feet? This includes Lani who also seems to have packed it on around the hips. They sight like a first attempt by someone who objective started out in animation.

It is possible, if enough people write and complain about how this movie ends, maybe Hot Wheels will perform another movie that will waste the series properly.

I contain that the Hot Wheels movies are meant for older children, but my 4 year-old loves all of these movies, and the ultimate run is no exception. Without fail, when he is allowed to resolve a movie, he picks one of the Acceleracers volumes. Personally, I can’t follow the story-line and I don’t understand the design, but my husband thinks they are broad as well. I recommend this movie for children that indulge in playing with Hot Wheels and/or who like cares, trucks, etc. Mammoth movie!

And it’s about time, too! This was definitely one of Disney’s better shows in the early/mid-90s. Both kids and adults can derive a superior laugh out of this prove and the humor should have up well over the years, nothing too dated.

I hear that there won’t be any extras in this spot, but for the chance to finally find own of this series, I’m more than willing to forgive that. Especially when there’s also supposed to be captioning, surround sound and decent artwork on the packaging. Disney also apparently learned their lesson with previous DVD series releases and this time they’re including the pilot. Only the first 25 eps of season 1, though, so hopefully the second half will be along soon.

There’s always hope that the next half of the season will have the extras this one is lacking, but even without that, it’s mild more than worth the money to finally have Darkwing on DVD.

Recent conversation I had with a friend -

Me: It really was the best point to ever. Sadly, I haven’t been able to bring myself to contemplate the rest of that DVD I got of the first season. I was so aroused that they had establish the edited version of the first episode on the DVD. I mean sheesh! I have the unedited version on the novel video release. What were they thinking of? Don’t they judge that people who rob the expose do so because they actually want to discover it as it was?

Friend: What the hell? Why do they edit all the shows on DVDs these days? … Design to promote illegal distribution by driving people to P2P networks for the recent versions.

I admire this exhibit, I really do. I was on the list to be informed when it came out on DVD, and the petite Amazon e-mailed re: its availability I placed my order. I was so angry when it came. The microscopic it arrived I popped it in and watched the two-part pilot episode.

I haven’t touched it since. I was so disheartened at the cuts that had been made (the entire opening skedaddle sequence and assorted gags and dialogue throughout), I didn’t have the heart to go attend to it and be disappointed again.

I don’t know *why* the cuts were made. I doubt it was to tone down any cartoon violence as other equally “violent” moments were left in. I suspect these were edits that were made when the demonstrate was actually unruffled on the air, edits made due to time considerations and for more commercial region. However, the corpulent footage should have been restored and included when Disney decided to release the exhibit on DVD.

I don’t want to be negative. I wouldn’t have reviewed except that, looking at what people have written, I gaze that no one has mentioned the edits. Younger viewers, people who didn’t discover the prove when it first came out or who didn’t gaze it on video, many not even be aware. Composed, fans should know that the reveal has been tampered with before they choose it.

5 stars for the modern television indicate, but 3 stars for the DVD release.

What attracted me to this series was the artistic connections to Serial Experiments – Lain, which was an outstanding example of what anime is pleasant of out of genre. What kept me from getting to it when it first came out was that, depending on the review I looked at, it either sounded unimaginative or was painted as a ‘magical girl’ anecdote. Now that I’ve seen this first DVD I can portray that it is neither what I expected nor what the critics reported, but something quite original.

A young girl finds herself plummeting through the air only to wake up unexpectedly in a weird bed surrounded by people with wings. She discovers that, like her, each has awoken from a dream to acquire themselves in the Former Home with no memory of the past. And like them, she grows wings and acquires a halo. The remainder of these four episodes follow Rakka as she adjusts to her modern like and discovers the world of the Haibane, the Feeble Home in which they live, and the town of Glie, which forms their boundaries.

There are countless mysteries. Rakka and her friends like, Kuu, Hikari, Kana and Reku, only know the diagram things are, but have no understanding how this came to be. Thus the origins of the Haibane (charcoal feathers) and their role are mysteries. They exist within the walls of Glie, where no one, Haibane or normal human is allowed to enter the outside world. Only birds and the masked Toga (traders) can to so, and the Toga may not sigh. Amidst this, the Haibane themselves carry on, working in the town and living off its largess with surprising acceptance and a mountainous deal of charm.

And charm is what this series has a surfeit. The Haibane and the townsfolk all seem bounded together in a supportive fashion, which is almost, a model of what most of us would believe of as a perfect community. It doesn’t hold long before the viewer becomes complete enchanted. Not unprejudiced with the memoir, but the art, acting, and music as well. Despite all the signs that things are not really as they appear you will gather yourself hoping that things will go on impartial as they are, that the glimmer of light here will prevail.

What the future will bring, I can’t say. But I hope we gather add least a few more DVD’s of the tranquility and almost Zen-like atmosphere that permeates these first episodes. This is a ravishing fable that unfolds in the pastel shades of some extraordinary artwork and character gain. In any case, I contain you will bag the originality of the tale and its characters refreshing and worth pursuing.

As an artist I am in admire with this series. The world is richly portrayed, and novel in it’s blend of asian, european and astonishing elements. The myth is wearisome to make but in a honorable procedure, there is a gentle, soft telling of a account here which is rare and fresh, and the characters and unfolding state are better for it. You can’t scrutinize this series without becoming aware of the definite care and devotion the artists have do into it.

This is an animation which evolved from a written record, which evolved from a fragment of poetry, so maybe there is some literary aspect of it that failed to steal the Amazon reviewer. But don’t enjoy it, there is a lot going for Haibane Renmei beyond it’s artwork.

The epic, the characters, and the world they live in have depth and heart. It compares favorably to some of anime’s grand titles, notably “Inviting Away,” “Castle in the Sky,” “Lain,” and “Key the Metal Idol.” If you liked any of these, you will luxuriate in Haibane Renmei. I strongly recommend it.

Shirley Temple is Susan, the 17-year-old sister of the rather stuffy Contemplate (Myrna Loy), who develops an infatuation for artist Cary Grant. Grant is “asked” to date Temple until the infatuation wears off; meanwhile, he and Loy tumble in like. There are a couple of terrific scenes, like the one in the restaurant where all the characters converge in sizable confusion and misunderstanding. There is also a very lively breeziness in all the proceedings (helped along mostly by Rudy Valee as Loy’s longtime beau and Roy Collins as a psychiatrist) . Worth a scrutinize.

Far from Grant’s worst (THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION) and definitely not his best (THE Poor TRUTH) THE BACHELOR & THE BOBBY-SOXER honest kinda sits somewhere in the middle, well, maybe honest a petite higher than the middle. The cast is strong, the script a tiny forced, but the direction by Irving Reis is flat and uninspired. If Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges or Leo McCarey had directed this same movie it would be a masterpiece.

After a brief encounter, teenager Shirley Temple has fallen deeply in cherish with the older but dashing Cary Grant. So deep in fact that she sneaks into his apartment while he’s gone. Grant returns a few minutes before the law does and next thing you know Grant is ordered by the court to hang out with Temple until she falls out of cherish with him! Explore what I mean by the script being forced.

Anyway, that’s a long and confusing set-up unbiased to witness Grant in a difficult dwelling, but it’s almost worth it cause some really laughable stuff happens next. What most people seem to remember is when Grant turns the tables and actually acts like a crazy talking teenager “Hi. Mello greeting, yookie dookie!” But my well-liked scene is when Grant takes Assume Myrna Loy to dinner at a savor club and before long everybody in the cast is sitting at their table arguing. Rudy Vallee even has his chair stolen at one point!

THE BACHELOR & THE BOBBY-SOXER is worth watching (a few times) and has some respectable screwball scenes, but it honest never reaches that lunatic poke that made THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN’S CREEK, BRINGING UP BABY and Esteem CRAZY such timeless classics.

“The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father” was made in 1962 and released in movie theaters in March 1963. It’s a mix of romantic comedy and drama, with a grand blend of black but poignant moments and silly ones too (including a few ‘fall-on-the-floor’ segments of hilarity) . And the “through-the-eyes-of-Eddie” ending is impartial perfect.

Most of the really amusing scenes in the film are supplied by 8-year-old Ronny Howard, who makes his design through a rollercoaster of emotions in the movie, and aloof stays on the rails of “believability” while doing so, IMO. He’s very comical at times in “Courtship”, and also is able to turn on the water works as needed too. I, myself, have never seen a better child actor up on the conceal (gargantuan mask or diminutive), although 11-year-old Dean Stockwell’s performance in 1947′s “Gentleman’s Agreement” would ghastly dazzling high in that category as well.

Ronny Howard made “Courtship” during a smash in the filming of his TV series, “The Andy Griffith Expose”, on which Howard played “Opie Taylor” (probably the cutest kid ever on TV, especially during Season 1 of that common and endearing sitcom) . I’m guessing that this movie was filmed sometime between seasons two and three of the Griffith Demonstrate.

The knowing and like a flash script for “The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father” dishes up several laughable lines for Ronny (“Eddie Corbett”) to whisper, some of which you certainly are not liable to rep residing within any script of Ronny’s Andy Griffith television series. Such as when Eddie asks his father (“Tom Corbett”; played very nicely by 46-year-old Glenn Ford) the following question:

“Dad, what do the numbers mean after a lady’s name? It says here {in this magazine} ’40-18-35′.”

To which Glenn Ford then replies (having his curiosity most definitely piqued by the robust measurements Eddie fair relayed) : “Holy smoke, who’s that?!”

By the blueprint — Those eye-popping measurements were said by Eddie in the film to be those of Jayne Mansfield. Per data I can gain, those stats are about accurate too. According to one online source, Jayne’s blooming figure is said to have averaged a head-turning “40-21-35.5″. (Tom Corbett was upright — “Holy smoke” indeed!)

Other captivating and precocious dialogue spoken by young lad Edward in this film include references to “colossal busts”, “my sugar man”, and a converse about “girls not looking so superior from leisurely”. (Ronny, then, must have never wandered over to the location of “The Dick Van Dyke Exhibit” during his tenure as “Opie”, in order to study Mary Tyler Moore. His “from tedious” evaluation would be permanently erased from his mind if he had done so.)

“Courtship” offers up a exquisite and (ahem) well-rounded cast. Besides the two leads of Ford and Howard, there’s also the never-lovelier 28-year-old Shirley Jones as the woman next door, plus Stella Stevens, Dina Merrill, Jerry Van Dyke, and Roberta Sherwood.

It’s nice to be able to gaze Jerry Van Dyke here in a role where he doesn’t have to report a clumsy and stuttering wimp-like character. Don’t rep me injurious, though, Jerry’s one of the best “wimps” in the business. No offense. But it’s nice to eye him in a different, more assertive section for a change, which he plays here as “Norman Jones” (a playboying disc jockey at the radio region where Ford serves as Program Manager) . Heck, he ends up with Stella Stevens as a mate; so he certainly can’t be called a loser here.

Also spy out for Ronny Howard’s right dad, Rance, in a slight section as a camp counselor. Rance pops up in a lot of his son’s TV shows and movies, often showing up in bit parts on “The Andy Griffith Expose” too.

Ronny’s brother, Clint, age 3, also has a cameo in “Courtship” (in the birthday-party scene) . And “Miss America 1955″, Lee Meriwether, has a limited role as a secretary/receptionist.

There’s a profitable chemistry in “Courtship” amongst the characters (between Ronny and Glenn and also between Shirley and Glenn) . And the fair subject of losing a wife and mother to sudden death is dealt with honestly and openly throughout the film, producing some heartfelt and realistic scenes between Ford’s character and Ronny’s.

The “listless fish” scene might have been a tad bit over-the-top, IMO, but what that scene, more than any other, demonstrates in this movie is Ronny Howard’s considerable acting abilities as an eight-year-old boy. The tail-end of that emotional “fish” scene has Ronny shivering and partly crying in a manner that truly makes the viewer absorb he has unprejudiced been through a traumatic experience. (Gaze the Season-Four “Andy Griffith” episode “Opie The Birdman” for another worthy example of Howard’s worthy acting chops. He’s broad there too.)

This movie was filmed with a reliable deal of tender loving care it seems to me. The colors are rich and delectable and the movie’s sets exude an “upper class” kind of quality. The Corbett’s plush-looking apartment is probably one that a lot of people would be willing to fork over some serious cash for even today. (Housekeeper “Mrs. Livingston” {Sherwood} even remarks in the film: “There are women who would marry you this very cramped for the equipment you have in this apartment”.)

I luxuriate in movies that were made during this particular time period (1950s/1960s) . You can almost soak up the era in which the film was made factual through the hide, and nestle down comfortably into it.

I had never realized before getting this DVD that this motion describe was filmed in a super-wide “scope” aspect ratio (2.35:1) . Heretofore, I’d only seen the film in a Full-Frame (1.33:1) TV format. I imagine many DVD buyers have had similar experiences, where a particular film’s new veil shape is totally a mystery until purchasing the movie on the better-quality DVD format.

I didn’t know what I was missing (literally) until seeing the film in its intended Widescreen shape. After seeing any movie in its “OAR”, it’s difficult to tolerate anything less (again, literally) . Any pan-and-scanned, Full-Frame version is high-tail to be second-rate by comparison. And “Courtship” is no exception.

Warner Home Video brought “The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father” to DVD with the release of this disc in May of 2003; and they’ve done a very salubrious job on the film transfer here (IMHO anyway) . It isn’t what you’d call an absolutely “perfect” DVD print though. A few speckles of dust and dirt appear here and there; and a few places could be honed-in to better razor-sharpness. But, overall, this anamorphic DVD print is well-organized, with nicely-saturated colors. Many scenes ooze ultra-rich color, with red showing up particularly shiny and beautiful here.

The DVD has a few Special Features attached. Not too many; but some. There’s a three-person Audio Commentary Track, which is nice. The three female leads all participate in the Commentary (Shirley Jones, Dina Merrill, and Stella Stevens) .

There’s a Theatrical Trailer for the film as well. And it’s kind of a “special” trailer, in that it’s the “Hollywood Preview Engagement” trailer for the movie (which was only seen in selected theaters around the country) . The trailer is in Anamorphic Widescreen here and looks quite shapely. It runs for 2:56. Audio for the trailer is in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono.

The only other bonus items are some text-only production notes and a one-screen list of credits for the cast and crew.

There’s nothing really out-of-this-world spectacular about “The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father”. But I bask in watching this film a favorable deal. The interaction between the characters is both well-done and titillating. This is unbiased a edifying, smart, charming, fun, silly (and sometimes shaded) movie.

A recommended DVD seize (even if you’re not “40-18-35″) . …. Gee whiz, I wonder how such a ‘healthy’ woman can jog without falling over? Must be quite an adventure.

This is really a mountainous version — I contemplate it’s hands down the best Ivanhoe! — and expansive fun, plus it’s incredible to explore Olivia Hussey. (The newer A&E production is gorgeous ample, but the lead actor is so bland and, at 5 hours, it’s unprejudiced too long!)

Unfortunately the VHS tape of this 1982 version is as rare as hen’s teeth and it needs to be released on DVD *now*!!

Since “The Scarlet Pimpernel” is (finally) out on DVD next month, I hope it won’t be too long before it’s joined by this attractive miniseries. I’ll be first in line to steal it.

I have seen both film versions of Ivanhoe as listed in the Leonard Maltin video guide, and this definitely vanquishes all comers. Fill this or not, but when I first acquired the video I watched it on a daily basis for the next few weeks (and I detached do that sometimes) – my long-suffering family would confirm my statement – and I believe that anyone who has watched this film would agree with me that all too rarely has a spacious book like Ivanhoe been able to have a film this great to do justice to it. Besides the colour, sounds and minor episodes which all blend in this film to beget the best recreation of the atmosphere of the age of chivalry I ever saw, what I care for most about this film is the contrivance the people who made the film paid attention to all the petite things that a purist would be grateful for – not only getting the devices and colours, and even the mottoes of the knights’ escutcheons moral, but retaining artistic integrity by refusing to join everyone else in making Brian de B.-G. and Maurice de Bracy out-and-out-bad guys; indeed, portraying them with a suitable deal of sympathy. As an admirer of Maurice de Bracy for quite some time, I was happy to accumulate that my favourite character retained all the qualities given to him by Scott even when appearing on camouflage, and that his friendship with Brian and Reginald F.-d.-B. was portrayed in all its sincerity. Sam Neill and the person who acted R. F.-d.-B. never acted better (or rather, I should say, they acted as well as they always do) and were quite perfect in their roles. In fact, the procedure the three ‘bad guys’ (they’re not really dreadful but we’ll call tham that for short, since Wilfred is the ‘hero’ and they’re on the other side) work together is exceedingly fun to peek and they all appear to be enjoying themselves and being involved about the whole thing which makes it even more fun for the viewer, and brings out their characterisation marvellously. (Impartial to explain how proper they are to their characters: in the first peer of a few seconds each that you come by of them in the first sequence, with no shields to identify them, I was able, the first time I watched the explain, to guess who they were honest from their expressions and appearance – correctly, as I later found; at that point I really had no thought who they were!) Anthony Andrews carried off the -oh-I-am-sick-ouch-thanks-Rebecca-but-I’m-already-in-love-with-Rowena act splendidly, but to behold him at maximum charm seek at ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’. For the rest, I was very impressed with the method all the rest of the cast acted, from Cedric and Wamba through Locksley and the heroines accurate down to Conrade Mont-Fichet and William de Wyvil (though he’s not called that in the display) . And even for those who haven’t read the book, this film would be a huge thing to scrutinize. Even if you don’t know the characters, you collect to know them through here and the narrative itself is fast-paced and dripping with chivalry and all the trimmings – what more could you want?
